Days 33 - 40

Got a bit behind on the blog...

Day 33
December 6, 2011
Ran 10 miles in New Smyrna Beach

Trying to get ready for the 1/2 marathon that is coming up quickly...

Day 34
December 7
New Smyrna Beach to Manatee Hammock Campground (just south of Titusville).
41 miles

Today was a lot of highway riding and going through towns. We dealt with another steady headwind. We camped at a place right across from Kennedy Space Center. We had been there in 2001 when we were traveling with the kids so we didn't feel a strong pull to go back. We did talk about how much we regret not seeing a live shuttle lift off (we missed one by two weeks).

Day 35
December 8
Manatee Hammock Campground to Indiatlantic
36.6 miles

We actually had a bit of a tailwind for part of this day but we just didn't feel like riding very far. We ended up getting a nice hotel room and had a lazy afternoon and evening.

Day 36
December 9
Indiatlantic to Vero Beach
34 miles

Bike path and sidewalks most of the way. Honestly though it was pretty boring - the traffic was heavy so it was rare to hear the ocean. There were only a few spots you could actually see the water because most of the area has expensive houses with shrubs and fencing.

Scott's been working hard at coming up with a reason for crashing today but all he's come up with so far is "as I was going over the handlebars..."

Days 37-40
Drove from Vero Beach to Homestead

Woke up to Scott being a bit stiff and sore and torrential rains. There were flood warnings out for where we were headed. We decided we'd gone far enough south and rented a u-haul and drove it to the RV and Jeep in storage in Homestead, Florida. We took a few days off and got to meet Nancy (a cousin) in Miami on Tuesday. Looking forward to riding the Keys next week.
