Bulleit

Bulleit had the coolest bar - made out of old barrels

We were told this distillery is the oldest one still operating in Kentucky (but we also heard from other distilleries that they were the oldest...). It shut down for quite a few years but in the last 10 years they have opened it back up again.

They have a lot of cool old equipment

They talked a lot about the "heads, hearts and tails" on this tour - first time we'd heard that term. Basically during the distillation process they would keep out the tails (aka low wine) - because it wasn't as high quality as the heads and hearts.

The master distillers tasting room...

A pretty cool miniaturized version of the process - from the ingredients to fermentation to distilling to the barrel.

One of the rules in making bourbon is they aren't allowed to use barrels more than once. They sell the used barrels to other liquor processors (rum, scotch, tequila).

Safety First!

Bulleit's rendition of a cooperage - where the barrels are made. We found it interesting that there were very few places that make their own barrels - most distilleries we toured bought theirs from a common source.

All of the important ingredients and elements
 that go into Bourbon...

Bulleit is the #1 Rye whiskey in the world. I don't like rye whiskey - those made with wheat appeal to me more.
