Yes, we are a bit crazy...
We decided to take a few months off work and spend it bicycling and camping. Why? There are lots of answers to that question
and it changes all the time so we won't answer it right now...
For those of you who don't know us well; this will be Scott's seventh long distance bike trip and Ann's third. We started near
Bryan, Texas and plan to go to Key West, Florida. We've brought along our iPad and are hoping to keep the blog updated as
internet connections allow.
We started at our friends house (Don & Barb) - we had planned to start a couple of days earlier but between a stolen credit card and winds
gusting to 35 mph we ended up waiting. Of course there is always those last minute issues...
And we're off! Wondering who put lead in our Bob bags overnight - surely we didn't pack that much stuff?
Did I mention it was cold that morning? It was 34 degrees when we left - I can hear all of our Alaskan friends saying "but that's warm!"
Problem is you can only pack so many clothes for both the cold and warm... Of course we were taking off layers down the road.
We ended up going a shorter route that was a county road - it was very dusty and rocky but also very quiet and peaceful.
We didn't make it as far as we thought we had planned but are very thankful we didn't because we ended up at a great B & B/campground. Checkpoint Harley in Richards, Texas was great - they have cabins if you want, or a nice place to pitch a tent. Of course most important they have clean, hot showers and a shared kitchen. Doris even gave us some farm fresh eggs to cook up for breakfast!
This is one of their mascots - a feral hog that was shot on their property a few years back. If your going to be in the area check out www.mexicanhillranch.com
11-4-11 Day #1 Bryan tor Richards, Texas. 5.5 hours riding. 39 miles.
