Antigua, Guatemala Week #2

oops! Looks like someone had a rough night...

When we went home a few hours later they were fixing it. Scott was impressed with the safety measures the electric company had in place - we didn't see a lot of evidence of safety protocols anywhere else...

A pretty day with Agua showing herself.

Walked up to Cerro de la Cruz (cross on the hill) for a great view of Antigua. Of course by the there were clouds over Agua - still pretty cool.

La Merced church

When we were taking the Antigua tour Elizabeth commented that there are ruins everywhere in Antigua and they are trying to figure out what to do with them. This one was on the way up to Cerro de la Cruz - kids were playing basketball right next to it. Sometimes ruins speak for themselves...

VW vans everywhere - with no rust. Right after we got back to the states there was an article in our local paper about a couple who drove their VW van from Alaska to Argentina. They commented that everyone loved the bus - I could see it opening doors!

Traditional clothes and on a cell phone. We saw one lady wearing traditional clothing while carrying a big bundle on her head and talking on the cell phone. During the tour Elizabeth commented that the single biggest change for Guatemala in the last 20 years has been internet connection for almost everyone.

Having too much fun!

Road work in Antigua - digging up old rocks and putting down new ones...

Lots of cop cars down this street - headquarters? or donut shop? ;-)

Ancient water delivery system at Santa Domingo hotel (which used to be a church)

Traditional Lenten decorations

It's hard to get in a picture but notice the flowers hanging down from the ceiling?

We walked by this big dog every morning - he just ignored us. It was amazing how many husky mixes there were in Antigua - seems a bit warm for them.

A typical ambulance - they would put their lights and sirens on but usually didn't pass anyone (and people rarely pulled over). It was usually easy to tell if they had a patient inside - they went even slower (the roads were very bumpy).

This lady is most likely headed to park central to sell her textiles (bundle on the front) with a toddler on her back - but she stops to offer someone less fortunate than she is some spare change...

rolling pins!

There was a group of ladies selling their textiles but also playing with this baby who was grinning ear to ear. This lady wanted me to buy something - I agreed if I could get a picture - but then the baby wouldn't smile... :)

This arch was built for the nuns to go from their home to the school without having to go outside - now it's the most photographed site in Antigua (especially when Agua is out).

They were moving the parrots around at Santo Domingo.

Went to a pizza restaurant and enjoyed sitting on the top deck looking at more ruins - the pizza wasn't all that good though...

Bougainvillea flowers grow in Key West - so when I ask if these were the same flower I was told "no - they are called bugambilia."

Again - Guatemalan women are fuerte (strong) and amazing!
