Villages around Antigua

Our instructor took us to a few villages while we were taking classes from her. This was our first ride on a chicken bus. It was an adventure in itself!

The church at San Antonio Agua Caliente

The market building

The village of San Antonio is known for their textiles. Johanna is our teacher - she is the lady on the left.

This market is a cooperative - a portion of the sales go to
the local school

Until her mom distracted her with food she kept handing me
items to buy.

We ended up buying several textiles from her

This little museum on the top floor of the market has displays of the different colors and patterns of traditional clothes the locals wear (each village has it's own pattern).

We went to lunch after our visit - this was just a few days before valentines day and the kids were handing out balloons on the street.

This was in another village called Pastores. This building looked very out of place surrounded by smaller buildings - some of which were made of tin. This was kind of an optical illusion though - it was only about 20 feet deep - just big enough for offices.

Pastores is known for their leather work - this saddle sells for about $300 US.

Not much "safety first" here...

I can't imagine being an electrician here...

I just loved that this little kid was carrying his share of the wood - most likely this was gathered in order to have fuel to cook on.

The three of us all fit in this tuk tuk to ride from Pastores back to Antigua. The entire ride the driver was looking in the rear view mirror talking to Johanna about learning English. He was complaining about how hard it is to pronounce - we understand his pain...

A couple of kids dancing in the square in Jocotenango.
