Macadamia Nut Farm - Guatemala

Our instructor took us to this farm - I don't think we would have ever found it otherwise. It's about a 20 min chicken bus ride toward the town of San Miguel Duenas - but the drop off is in the middle of nowhere.

Macadamia trees live for 150 years - so they are a
sustainable crop. This farm gives new trees they have started to locals with room to grow the trees. Once they start producing nuts (within about 5 years) the farm will buy the nuts from the locals.

This is how they get rid of the shell - this machine has a little motor on it that turns the wheel.

After they are shelled they have to dry out - you can tell which are ready by shaking them - it literally sounds like the nut is floating in water until after it's been dried.

How they size the nuts.

Coolest bathroom ever...

Lorenzo owns the farm - he and his wife moved here over 30 years ago after he was injured as a firefighter.

These two enjoyed each others company - Lorenzo prides himself in how many dirty jokes he can tell... :)
